It is the estimated distance the Voyager 1 spacecraft turned 180° to take this image of the Earth. Carl Sagan wrote an elegantly brief description of this photograph in his 1994 book Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space.

As we watch technology, its trends, and the culture around it make that tiny blue dot even smaller, the image of “The Pale Blue Dot” is there to remind us how important our responsibility in understanding and connecting with each other truly is.
